US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advisory for Belgium, citing crime, terrorism and public unrest. The July 23 notice keeps the country at Level 2, which calls for increased caution. Officials added crime and unrest to the listed risks but did not raise the advisory level. The guidance applies to Americans visiting Brussels, other Belgian cities and major tourist areas across the country.

US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory
Belgium travelers should stay alert in tourist areas and transport hubs.

The revised notice places greater attention on theft in crowded locations and transport networks. Pickpockets often operate near railway stations, metro platforms, restaurants, airports and busy visitor districts. Travelers may also face purse snatching, stolen phones and theft from parked vehicles. The advisory recommends keeping passports, cash and electronics secure while moving through public spaces. Visitors should also avoid leaving luggage or other valuables unattended.

Rail travel receives added focus because thieves target bags stored above seats or near carriage exits. Officials point to theft reports on services connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Criminals may work in groups and use distractions to take wallets, phones or small pieces of luggage. Belgian Federal Police advise passengers to keep important belongings close and watch them during station stops. Travelers should remain alert when boarding, leaving trains or moving through crowded terminals.

Transport hubs and tourist districts draw added attention

The terrorism section identifies public gatherings, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas and places of worship as locations requiring caution. Schools, parks, transport systems and major events also appear in the updated guidance. Belgium’s national threat assessment remains at Level 3 on a four-level scale. Authorities describe that rating as serious and use it when they consider a threat possible and likely. Visitors should follow security instructions and stay aware of their surroundings.

Demonstrations and strikes can also affect movement within Belgian cities. Large gatherings may block roads, delay trains or interrupt local transport services. Police can restrict access around protest sites and redirect vehicles without advance notice. The advisory tells travelers to avoid demonstrations and monitor local information before starting a journey. Visitors should check rail, bus and metro updates when large events or labor actions take place.

Emergency contacts and trip planning remain essential

The guidance recommends registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program before or during a trip. STEP sends security alerts and helps the U.S. Embassy in Brussels reach citizens during an emergency. Travelers should also review entry rules, local laws and health information before departure. Keeping copies of passports and travel documents can support faster assistance after a loss or theft. Family members or trusted contacts should also receive a copy of the itinerary.

Belgium uses 112 for urgent police, fire and medical emergencies. The local police number is 101. Travelers should stay cautious near ticket machines, banks and ATMs, especially in crowded areas. The updated Belgium travel advisory does not call for avoiding the country. It asks visitors to prepare carefully, protect their belongings and follow official guidance. The Level 2 rating remains in effect as the summer travel season continues.
